Search volume tells you how many people could arrive, not how many will. Read it as an order of magnitude and a direction of travel, not a forecast.

How to interpret the numbers

Every volume figure, from every tool, is an estimate derived from sampling and rounding. Treat 1,000 and 1,200 as the same number. What matters is whether a term sits in the tens, hundreds, or thousands, and whether it is rising or falling.

Volume is also seasonal and geographic. An annual average hides a term that gets all its traffic in one quarter, which is exactly when you needed the page published.

Volume is the third thing to check

Check intent first, competition second, volume third. A high-volume term you cannot rank for is worth nothing; a low-volume term with buying intent that you can own is worth a great deal.

For newer sites, deliberately weight toward lower-volume terms. Ranking first for a 200-search term beats ranking fortieth for a 20,000-search one, every time.
