A sitemap does not make pages rank. It makes them discoverable — which matters most for exactly the pages that are hardest to find: new ones, deep ones, and ones with few internal links.
What belongs in a sitemap
Only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200. Leave out redirects, noindexed pages, paginated duplicates and anything blocked in robots.txt — listing them wastes crawl budget and generates Search Console warnings.
The lastmod date should be real. A sitemap that claims every page changed today teaches crawlers to ignore the field entirely.
After you generate it
Put it at /sitemap.xml, reference it from robots.txt, and submit it in Search Console. Then keep it generated rather than hand-maintained — hand-written sitemaps drift out of date within weeks, and the pages they omit are usually the newest and most valuable ones.
For large sites, split into multiple sitemaps under an index file, grouped by section so coverage problems are easy to localise.
