WHOIS answers questions that matter before you buy a domain, pitch a site, or trust a backlink: how old it is, who runs it, and whether it is about to expire.
What to look for
Registration date tells you the domain's age, which correlates loosely with trust — though a fifteen-year-old parked domain is worth less than a two-year-old active one. Expiry date matters for link prospecting: a domain expiring in three weeks is not somewhere to place a link.
Registrar and nameservers indicate how professionally the site is run. Frequent registrar changes and privacy shields on a supposedly corporate site are worth a second look.
Limits of the data
Since GDPR, most registrant contact details for individuals and EU entities are redacted, so WHOIS is no longer a reliable way to find an owner's email. Use the site's own contact page or a named author byline instead.
